How to Fix Corrupted InDesign Files
Corrupt InDesign, or bad InDesign documents that crashed, are unfortunately a reality. Hopefully this will not be something you experience, but if you do, here is a great potential work-around to fix InDesign files with Markzware’s Adobe plug ins, like ID2Q and Q2ID. Note – here is a listing of typical InDesign error messages:
The application InDesign has unexpectedly quit. A crash report has been generated. To provide us with the best chance of fixing this problem, please select Continue to add a detailed description that includes the steps required to reproduce the crash.
These are the instructions, with inventory list of software (XTensions and Plug-ins) needed. It is a work-around, however, one which generally works quite well…
Markzware develops Adobe plug ins and more products that can help solve this error issue. See below for Markzware File Recovery Service to FIX INDESIGN FILES.
What to do:
- Ensure that QuarkXPress 6 or 7 is installed.
- Ensure that Markzware’s ID2Q is installed.
- Open InDesign file in QuarkXPress via ID2Q (Under “Utilities).
- Save the (hopefully) converted corrupt InDesign file as a QuarkXpress file to your desktop with a QXP extension.
- Ensure that InDesign CS2, CS3, CS4, or CS5 is installed.
- Ensure that Markzware’s Q2ID plugin is installed.
- In InDesign (after Q2ID is loaded), simply go to “file->open.”
- Select the salvaged file now in a QuarkXPress QXP form.
*** If you can open InDesign file at this point, it is generally RECOVERED!***
TIP- after you fix corrupt InDesign files with the Markzware Adobe plug ins, it is best to then export them as an Adobe Interchange INX format. This should zap any corruption that may be lingering in most cases… then you can work-on!
Markzware is well known for its MarkzTools XTension to fix QuarkXPress files, as well, and also has Adobe plug ins to fix corrupt InDesign files, so submit your corrupt InDesign files today! (small one-time fee, plus fee if the InDessign file is recovered).

My important InDesign file that contained a year’s worth of work on a new history course suddenly became corrupt. Each time I tried to open it, InDesign would crash. And to make matters worse, my back up file was corrupt too. Desperate for help and afraid to face the idea of having to rewrite the course, I sought help from David Dilling and Arnold Roosch with Markzware. Not only did they respond right away (in just a few hours), they were able to fix the file! This was the best one hundred bucks I have ever spent. David and Arnold are my heroes! They saved me thousands of hours and dollars. More importantly, they saved my sanity.
My InDesign document kept shutting InDesign down the second it started up. This was extremely saddening, especially during finals week! After stumbling across this website from Google, I emailed David and was able to get a response with my fixed file within 24 hours! The file works perfectly, with only a few fonts that needed updating, along with links to external pictures, etc…I am extremely grateful and the prompt and friendly service just put the icing on the cake! If you ever have a corrupted file, don’t hesitate the send these guys an email!
Hello Readers,

Thanks a again.
I was stuck with a useless file, then I found your solution. It worked great—thanks so much!!! You guys saved me about a month of work!
As designer and editor for a university performing arts center, I had spent (what seemed like) weeks assembling and formatting a program book for an upcoming appearance by a world-renowned dance ensemble. Last week, planning to resume work on the document, I tried to access the file and encountered error messages galore! The school’s computer technicians, experts in the field, struggled with the thing for several days, ultimately pronouncing it corrupt and irretrievable. Fortunately, I discovered Markzware’s site and contacted David Dilling with a cyber-plea for help. Because Dilling is based in The Netherlands, I despaired of receiving a timely response OR a fix given the time parameters I’d specified. Only minutes later, Dilling replied and said he’d be happy to investigate the problem. IF he were able to restore the file–he would charge me. If not–”no cure, no pay.”
Within an hour, Dilling contacted me with the restored file attached. Should I consider the results satisfactory, I could pay the $99 fee. I opened the file–it was nearly perfect. Fonts, images, everything! AND I hadn’t emailed any links. I was also impressed with Dilling’s integrity: he delivered the goods BEFORE he was paid, allowing me to assess what turned out to be, quite frankly, a miracle.
I unqualifiedly recommend Markzware’s services. Life is short. Save your hair-pulling and teeth-gnashing for politicians, blizzards and lousy coffee.
Thank you so much for helping me!
I am a teacher creating the yearbook for my high school. Since the file was due in about a week or so, I thought there wasn’t going to be a yearbook this year… David recovered 5 long months worth of work! I don’t know what he did, but his magic worked! And he did it within a few hours! Absolutely amazing! worth every sent! You saved my life!
I paid $99 as a last resort to recover an InDesign file that randomly went corrupt on me and I’m pleased to report that IT WORKED! Thanks, Markzware for saving me probably 2 weeks of time to rebuild to where I was from scratch. Highly recommended!!
