Here is a very useful prepress tip from Markzware, particularly if you’re using Adobe Illustrator files. Can you use FlightCheck to preflight Illustrator files? Can you collect files and package Illustrator fonts and images used into one folder? FlightCheck does this stand-alone and compresses the file.
In an Illustrator file, you’ve got images and all kinds of things. In Illustrator, you might go in and select your items, go on to type, and create outlines. You will need to package fonts that are embedded in the file. You may need to pass it on to somebody else who must edit the text and change type. Save the file, and then drag and drop it onto FlightCheck.
FlightCheck is a stand-alone application which can preflight many desktop publishing (DTP) file formats. So, you can use it to check your files, before you go to print or use it online. You can package Illustrator and attach the fonts before sending the job off to the next party. You’ll get a preflight report. You’ll want to fix the problems marked in red, before going to print. You probably don’t want low image resolution, etc.

package Illustrator with Markzware’s pre press software.
There is a lot of information in the main interface: information about low image resolution, missing fonts, and things that you might need to check and fix before printing. When you select Collect Job, you get a window with a lot of possibilities. You can collect or package Illustrator, package fonts and images, required plug-ins, and things like that.
You can also compress the job, which is quite useful for sending on to the next party. As soon as you click Collect, FlightCheck will collect files for the entire job in a zipped up file. You’ll get a “FlightCheck approved” icon, sort of like a Certified PDF, but for source job files, like Adobe files.
When the collected job file is decompressed, there will be a folder with all used fonts, all used images, a preflight report, and the Illustrator file. It’s a great tool to package Illustrator, InDesign, and many other file formats, because it also compresses the file for you.
Markzware’s FlightCheck can collect everything used in your Illustrator file and package it up for sending on to the next party, or for archiving or other uses.
