Quark to InDesign Plugin Q2ID to Convert QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign

Quark to InDesign leads to good discoveries: InDesign plugin, Q2ID!
Adobe InDesign was introduced to Michel Kurita at the annual Design Thinkers conference hosted by the Registered Graphic Design Association in Toronto. Prior to the event, this senior graphic designer, design and creative products development, Industry Canada, Government of Canada, had been using QuarkXPress to create reports, brochures, packaging, point-of-purchase displays, and trade-show collateral for the Canadian government.

Motivation to switch from QuarkXPress to InDesign, plus a few crashes while using QuarkXPress, prompted Kurita to do some research on software solutions that would help resolve some of the issues the graphics department had been experiencing. This led to Q2ID, the Quark to InDesign plugin, and MarkzTools, the Quark XTension, from Markzware.

“After my first crash with QuarkXPress, I looked for Quark fixes and found MarkzTools,” Kurita states.

Developed by Markzware, Inc., Santa Ana, CA, MarkzTools is an XTension that helps prevent corrupted QuarkXPress documents from stalling the creative workflow and save Quark file content. The solution also enables users to retrieve text from corrupted files and to save Quark files to lower versions when needed, among other features. At the time of Kurita’s discovery, MarkzTools was only available for Mac, and Kurita was using a PC: “I gritted my teeth and redid the document.
“The second crash, however, was with a larger, more important document,” Kurita recalls. Again, Kurita took to the Web to visit sites and blogs in search of some direction on how best to resolve the creative workflow problem. One blog entry in particular caught Kurita’s eye — the recounting of a Markzware user who had used a simple, inexpensive InDesign plugin to convert corrupted QuarkXPress content into a workable, native InDesign file, called Q2ID.

Quark to InDesign Plugin, Q2ID: Convert QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign

Markzware’s data conversion software can convert Quark to InDesign, including fonts, images, colors, and more

Q2ID (QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign) by Markzware is an InDesign plugin to convert Quark. It provides a quick, easy and affordable way to migrate QuarkXPress content into a new Adobe InDesign document. The conversion is enabled with a single click using [Q2ID > Convert QuarkXPress Document], which converts document elements, including page positioning, color models, fonts and styles, images, and text attributes, as well as tables, layers, blends, runarounds, linked text boxes and anchored boxes, and Pantone colors and other color models.

“I was in the process of switching [from QuarkXPress to InDesign] at this point anyway, so I bought the Q2ID software, just to see,” Kurita explains. “At this point, it was 10:00 a.m. on a Friday, and I was looking at staying at work all weekend to redo the document. It took all of 10 minutes to download the software and convert my corrupted document. Another 10 minutes later, I was thoroughly impressed and relieved. Steam was no longer coming out of my ears, and I could see in color again!”

Q2ID, the InDesign plugin from Markzware to convert Quark, is available via the Q2ID page. Q2ID plays a critical role in the graphic design and production phases for the government’s graphic arts projects.

“I am always going back to update old Quark documents,” Kurita notes. “[The Q2ID] plug-in figures into my workflow almost once a week. … The investment was a no-brainer. I have a family to go home to every day, so I can’t afford to muck around re-doing documents. I have kids to pick up from school and weekend plans that I have to keep. The [cost] paid for itself in less than an hour.”
