PDF (Portable Document Format) is an open standard created by Adobe for document exchange. This file format is used to represent documents independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file contains a description of a fixed-layout flat document, including text, fonts, graphics, and information necessary to display.

PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress is an extremely valuable QuarkXPress utility for PDF data conversion from Markzware that converts a PDF to an editable application document. Here are some PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress preferences that you can set:

Various commands in a PDF tell the screen or printer to move to a specific page location and draw text, images and shapes. This process can be quite complex, so PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress needs to make an “educated guess” on how to convert the drawing commands to document objects, thus, some manual changes may be necessary.

Specific PDF information renders fonts and images for screen or print. A PDF may use glyphs (text characters) containing commands for drawing or printing character shapes, but the actual characters may not be defined as valid Unicode values, so a conversion to an actual story may not be possible.

Example: A Type0 font may consist of a company logo image. You install the font, type the letter “A” and the logo appears. The PDF defines the “character” only as a number. The PDF Reader, or printer, fetches the commands and renders the character. Since it is not possible to know which “letter” was originally typed, a proper conversion to text would fail.

Markzware PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress is a QuarkXPress utility that allows users to edit PDF in QuarkXPress

A PDF is often generated with embedded fonts for display or print on any platform, but if the fonts are missing or not activated in your System at the time of conversion, the data conversion would be limited and have text flow problems. PDF images may lack link information to the original file, and may also be down-sampled to a lower resolution. This can be a problem if you would like to use the original high-resolution images. It is amazing that PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress can convert a PDF file to QuarkXPress as well as it does.
