ID2Q Outlines, Bullets and Numbering
Quark and InDesign handle outlines in very different ways. First of all, Quark 9 is the first version of Quark to handle Bullets ad Numbering. Quark 9 handles outlines through a special meta-style called an Outline Style. An Outline Style in Quark is made up of Bullet and Number styles. The only way to continue numbering across paragraphs in Quark 9 is to apply an Outline Style. This is much different than how InDesign works. In InDesign you define a series of Paragraph styles and then set a parameter to continue numbering from the previous style. With these differences in mind, following is some information regarding known issues with converting Outlines from InDesign to Quark 9 using ID2Q.
Quark 8 does not support Outline Styles, so ID2Q will typically apply a style to the Level Style without a bullet or number and then indent the sub-levels under a Level 1 style again with no bullets or numbers.
If you want to convert InDesign Outlines at all, you will need to run ID2Q under Quark 9 and not Quark 8.
ID2Q Numbering is only tracked at level 1 of an outline in Quark 9
Every time ID2Q encounters a Level 1 Numbering Style, all sub-levels will restart their numbering or bullet sequences.
ID2Q Numbering and Bullets are not supported in Quark 8
The above shows that, since Quark 8 does not support Bullets and Numbering, when you convert InDesign documents with outlines, you will get no bullets and numbers in Quark 8. You must use Quark 9 to see bullets and Numbers.
ID2Q Certain Bullet Characters Will Not Translate Correctly (Only supported under Quark 9)
From testing the bullet characters that do not appear to translate correctly are usually in OpenType fonts.
You can manually change the characters by editing the bullet style in Quark. ID2Q creates a separate bullet style for each bullet style in the original InDesign document. These styles do not show up under the regular Paragraph or Character Styles windows in Quark 9, but do show up and are editable from the Edit Menu under the Bullet, Numbering, and Outline Styles… menu item.
