1. So, tell us a little about yourself. Please provide your company name and location along with your professional title.
As Production Manager for Lachina Publishing Services in Cleveland, Ohio, my duties range on a daily basis, from making assignments, balancing workflow, managing technology initiatives, enhancing productivity through better software practices or trying new things, and talking with the staff about any issues they are facing technologically or otherwise.
2. How did you get started in this industry?
I started in the graphic design industry first as a print design art director, but really started in publishing as a production manager working on periodicals.
3. In the next 10 years how do you see the future of printed material?
Printed material may never go away completely, but it will certainly see a decrease over the next decade. With the introduction of e-readers and the advancements in mobile technology more and more material will be distributed electronically. There will always be a need for the content to be edited, designed, and put together in a way that makes sense. As technology becomes more readily available and distributed to the masses, we will find ourselves setting things up for multiple mediums throughout the entire production process.
4. How does FlightCheck help printing companies, even more so, in the economic down-turn we just experienced?
Markzware FlightCheck is our safe-guard. Through its customizable ground controls we are able to preflight and flag potential problems with all placed elements before they get to the final QC process. This process saves us incredible amounts of time and time is money. We want to catch all problems before they become big problems. With using Markzware’s preflighting software, it was saved us both time and money which is very important to us and our clients. We want to maintain the best service possible and, with using FlightCheck, we are confident that all is well by preflighting all of our projects with this software.
5. Could you give some details on the common preflight problems you are seeing in your workflow system?
The nature of our business frequently requires using “legacy” files which can be problematic. We also find problems in missing or unembedded fonts, or at times need to know what fonts are (or aren’t) being used. We also find RGB, or embedded images that come up as problematic due to the lack of the “placed’ art.
6. Are you getting in artwork and layouts from external sources?
We create all of our own layouts in-house. The artwork that we use is provided to us at times, and must be processed and preflighted before it makes it into our layouts.
7. Are you sending files to a printer?
Yes, we post files directly to printers. Some submission is ftp based while others are through online portals which do preflighting on the fly.
8. Which graphic programs are you using the most? Quark, Adobe CS4, others?
We use the software Adobe Creative Suite as our primary platform.
9. Could you explain your workflow process in a bit more detail and how FlightCheck v6.5 is a part of that?
We use FlightCheck in a way that is common from company-to-company. Files come in, they get processed, then “FlightChecked”–FlightCheck has become a verb in our office, replacing the term “preflight.”
10. What is the advantage of using FlightCheck Professional, a stand-alone application, as a publishing workflow tool?
There aren’t many limitations on it. Several applications have a preflight option built in, but the interfaces are not simple and clear cut, the options are limited, and there is not enough customization. FlightCheck’s preflight reports are clear and to the point.
11. What have you used in the past before FlightCheck Professional as your source for preflighting?
We have been long-time FlightCheck users. In my history within this industry, FlightCheck is the standard for preflighting.
12. Do you preflight check only the native file or do you also check (postflight) the resulting PDF as well?
We only preflight the native files. The files that our artists process and create out of Photoshop and Illustrator must be certified as “print-ready” before we move to any creation of final proofs.
13. What was your deciding factor in wanting to use FlightCheck?
We have had success since adopting FlightCheck as a part of our workflow in the past decade. The reliability and familiarity that we have come to expect from the program was our deciding factor in choosing to upgrade once again.
14. Would you recommend FlightCheck Professional to others?
I would recommend FlightCheck to others. A company’s digital assets in the world of print are its most important. FlightCheck confirms and guards the integrity of files and ensures that there will be no printability concerns in the final product.
