The Cleveland Digital Publishing Users Group (CDPUG) provides educational digital publishing information that helps graphic designers to expand their networks and professional development. CDPUG has offered a variety of graphic design and art programs, for over three decades.
Markzware develops preview, preflight, and file conversion software for printers, publishers, graphic designers, creative professionals, and the like. Markzware’s “Markz” line includes multi-featured applications that process InDesign, QuarkXPress, and PDF files, for use in numerous file formats on the macOS platform.

Many designers have shown interest in Serif’s Affinity suite of apps (Adobe alternatives), including Affinity Publisher. So, Markzware was pleased to be represented, at the CDPUG November 2020 event.
CDPUG Officer, Henry Lee, has experience in the industrial design, illustration, desktop publishing, computer science, packaging, printing industries, and more. Among other points, Henry presented information on Affinity Publisher, Serif’s affordable page layout app, which has features similar to Adobe InDesign’s.
For example, Publisher can open InDesign and IDML files. The Publisher perpetual license is $50, a one-time cost which is approximately what a one-month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription costs.
Markzware offers products that help to make Affinity Publisher more adaptable for page layout workflows. Product Manager, Doug Rosen, has experience that includes prepress, graphic arts, printing, service engineering, training, project management, product management, and beyond.
At the CDPUG event, Doug presented information on Markzware products for file conversion. He gave details on FlightCheck (print preflighting app) and PDFMarkz (PDF preview and conversion) products in development. Doug also gave overviews of IDMarkz (InDesign preview and conversion app) and QXPMarkz (QuarkXPress preview and conversion app).
“Finally, if your workflow requires you to create files to be converted to Affinity Publisher, IDMarkz is the best tool I’ve seen for this.”
– Kevin Slimp, publisher at Market Square Books and CEO of newspaperacademy.com
Doug demonstrated the IDMarkz app, which can quickly automate file migration from InDesign to Publisher and other formats. This is good news for users of Affinity Publisher and other Desktop Publishing (DTP) apps and file formats.

The “Markz” line of applications, by Markzware, could help you to get your InDesign, QuarkXPress, and PDF content into multiple applications and file formats. View this video, for more information (Doug’s presentation starts around 40 minutes into the video.):

IDMarkz can output InDesign files to many file formats, including:
• PDF
• TIFF
• PNG
• JPEG
• GIF

The IDML output is much more accurate. Other than IDML, outputs are based on the onscreen preview. When opened in InDesign, QuarkXPress, or Affinity Publisher, the IDML output can differ, in appearance, from the onscreen preview.
If you simply want to extract text from your InDesign file, you can extract text as plain text, RTF or html. These options give you a lot of flexibility.
Markzware’s “Markz” apps preview DTP files and open them in Publisher, Acrobat, Illustrator, PNG, TIFF, GIF, PDF, IDML, and JPEG. So, you can get content into a preferable format, for your workflow.
