Reverse Engineering To
Extract Content From Desktop Publishing File Formats

Extract InDesign content from desktop publishing file formats in Adobe Creative Suite INDD. Use Markzware’s content search application, PageZephyr Search, to search InDesign. Then, use found content to extract DTP.

Technology for data mining, data harvesting and examining text
Since 1995, Markzware has been a household name for Graphic Arts software solutions. Markzware invented (United States Patent # 5,963,641) a quality control system for printing. This system is “preflighting.” Since its founding as a sole-proprietorship in 1992, Markzware established significant goodwill. Its customers, as well as the printing and publishing industries, have held Markzware in high regard.

For over 20 years, Markzware has reversed engineered many file formats. Markzware specializes in decrypting original source formats, including:

  • Adobe InDesign (.indd)
  • QuarkXPress (.qxp)
  • Microsoft Publisher (.pub)

These file types are better known as desktop publishing applications (DTP).

Computers, operating systems, applications and associated documents are often saved in a proprietary format. They usually have a limited lifespan, becoming obsolete and preventing access to data. Documents are often only readable by the system and application used to create the document. PageZephyr Search is the solution that provides assurance of access to proprietary documents.

Ensuring backwards-compatibility and opening older proprietary file-types is difficult. Software manufacturers ask the user to ‘upgrade to the latest version’ to access their data. Markzware’s technology resolves forwards and backwards-compatibility problems. PageZephyr Search users can access business assets and content created in Adobe InDesign CS – CC.

Markzware provides a means for corporate assets to transform into an accessible format that is easy to use. This is without the need for the native (proprietary) application.

PageZephyr Search performs a digital forensics process. Then, it homogenizes the proprietary data into a common TEXT or RTF file type. It indexes folders and directory volumes. This allows the user to search for a keyword(s) within proprietary file types.

You can customize found content, to create new content. Re-create and repurpose content from what already exists. This reduces a significant amount of time and expense, while increasing content value. You can copy and paste text from relevant stories of similar topics within Adobe InDesign (.indd). Then, you can combine and edit those stories.

PageZephyr has the capability to data mine and to harvest text content. This is not limited to the speaking language of the original document. The following is an example of a DTP layout, highlighting a keyword found in the text, again WITHOUT having to open the native Adobe InDesign document:

Additionally, PageZephyr can help inform and alert the intelligence community of suspect material. This refers to text within secure, proprietary, encrypted DTP file layouts within Adobe InDesign.

We are eager to partner or license our file ‘reader’ technology or to partner with a larger company. If interested, please contact Markzware.
