Quark to InDesign and
Quark User Converts to InDesign
with Markzware Q2ID

This long-time Quark user was able to successfully convert files from Quark to InDesign with Q2ID, the Adobe InDesign plugin from Markzware:

“Markzware’s Q2ID was a very good investment and I can
wholeheartedly recommend it to other creative professionals.”
– Jon Sheperd, owner/sole proprietor, TCE Design

My name is Jon Shepherd and I am the owner and sole proprietor of TCE Design. I have had the business running for 15 years now, but have many more years experience in design and print. At TCE Design, I create anything from leaflets to brochures and catalogues. To compliment this side of the business, I also design websites for SME companies.

Having originally trained as a professional photographer, I shoot high-end digital studio and location photography for the complete package. Adobe has always been very important to me; Illustrator/Photoshop and Dreamweaver are in daily use! Recently I have upgraded to CS5.5 InDesign Premium, this comes bundled with InDesign. I took a look at it but not seriously, having used QuarkXPress solely for page makeup for the past 25 years.

Started out with it on floppy disks for the SE30 9″ mono screen. How times have changed. I now work with a 27″ quad core iMac. This is the progress over the years!!

Macintosh coming of age

When I upgraded to the latest OSX, I foolishly thought that Quark was on top of that (it now seems it is not), and migrating to the new computer, I found that it wouldn’t even install! The previous computer had issues with Quark and had often crashed in the middle of a job.

Time to take a closer look at InDesign, I thought. I felt I should be able to get to grips with it, as it is not that far removed from Illustrator regarding functionality. However, I have a large back catalogue of clients’ work on Quark, and the thought of recreating jobs again was simply not an option, especially as I use Quark, and now InDesign, for brochures and large catalogues.

After a quick search on the web, I came across Markzware‘s excellent Q2ID plugin for InDesign. I so very nearly did not purchase it, though, as it is quite expensive to buy, if it didn’t work for me. Q2ID is used whenever I need to pick up an old Quark document, and at the moment, I use it quite often. Q2ID has done an excellent job at converting even the most complex of jobs. I simply cannot see that I would have been able to make the switch, if not for Q2ID :)

Markzware’s Q2ID was a very good investment and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to other creative professionals. Just don’t expect to convert and then pass straight to press; there are some areas that change slightly, such as graduated shades in Quark, from one color to transparent come up as that color to solid white. Not the fault of Q2ID, rather the different operating parameters of InDesign. Generally, though, I would say I get above 95% accuracy!!
