Preflighting helps users to avoid missing fonts and other costly printing errors:

Preflighting for print quality control is a must for the printing industry. Markzware FlightCheck preflighting software can check documents to catch missing fonts and similar printing errors, before printing. This can save time, money and re-printing.

Missing fonts, images, hairlines, stylized fonts, and more can result, if you don’t preflight. These printing errors can be costly, frustrating, and time consuming to fix. Avoid missing fonts and other printing issues in Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, and other file types, by using the FlightCheck, the standard for preflighting software by Markzware.

Markzware FlightCheck is the standard for checking files for the printing industry. It makes a difficult job an easier process,” states Billy Mays of Arkansas Graphics. The earlier in a process that printing errors are detected, the easier and cheaper it is to fix them. Designers should always preflight incoming data, simply to make sure that the print quality of the product they deliver will meet the customer’s needs.

Preflighting is the process to ensure your document is properly prepared to print, free of printing errors. Preflighting with FlightCheck is simple and requires little time. One of the daily woes we hear from prepress specialists is the influx of ill-prepared digital files received from less skilled customers.  A lot of printers try to help their customers by offering guidelines on how to get documents press-ready. Often, the customers don’t follow through, so it ends up being easier for the prepress department to just fix the job than to later plead with the customers to embed fonts in order to avoid missing fonts, or to stop using RGB images.

FlightCheck performs preflighting, which is not the same as postflighting. Markzware considers preflight to be specific to the creative process, when digital files are in their native application form. Postflight is a subset of preflight that refers specifically to file verification that occurs, for example, after the prepress document (usually a PDF) has been created and is used to drive prepress processes. Distinguishing between preflight and postflight is important. It ensures that print buyers and manufacturing partners are clear about when print quality control should take place in the workflow.

Preflighting has been adopted by the graphic arts community as the blanket or umbrella term that refers to file checking at any stage of the workflow.  It is essential to verify file integrity at several points in the process (creative, production, prepress), so it helps to distinguish these quality control checkpoints with terminology that reflects when and why the file is being checked. Preflighting software, FlightCheck, uses Markzware’s patented preflight technology.

Some common prepress / output problems that FlightCheck can check are:

  • Missing fonts or wrong fonts
  • Image Trapping
  • Banding
  • Incomplete or corrupt files
  • Execssive sizing/rotating of EPS, TIFF files int he page layout program
  • Spot colors not converted to prcess colors or vice versa
  • Nesting EPS files
  • TIFF files not converted from RGB to 4-color CMYK or Greyscale mode
  • Inadequate bleeds

Preflighting software, such as FlightCheck, can be used for a minimal investment by content creators to catch printing errors that may be costly to repair. Use FlightCheck to check files in Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, Illustrator, and more, before you print.
