Experienced application developer, Markzware, gives creative professionals a reliable way to help manage Adobe InDesign content. Markzware’s ID Util for macOS is a useful application that allows you to preview InDesign documents and elements, without needing the InDesign program itself. It is an app that is well worth downloading (for free!), at the Mac App Store.
Even if you don’t have the InDesign layout application, you may receive INDD files from customers, vendors or other workflow members. Since ID Util makes it easier to find and check images, it can make it easier to manage your files.
Preview InDesign Files
Preview or find images for modification and production of additional documents! Whether or not you have Adobe’s InDesign app, Markzware’s INDD previewing application enables you to see InDesign styled stories, used fonts, and linked images.
Using an easy drag-and-drop interface, you’ll be able to see Finder previews of your InDesign documents. ID Util’s Preferences also offers a preview option that enables Finder thumbnail previews.
How to Preview InDesign Files via ID Util for macOS
You can drag InDesign, InCopy, or IDML files onto ID Util’s Welcome window. Each file preview will open in a separate window.
You can get a Finder “Quick Look” preview of a large document, by selecting a file in Finder and pressing your spacebar. You can zoom out, to see thumbnails of multiple pages, or zoom in, to see more detail. Just select one of the Zoom preset values or use the zoom slider in ID Util.
View InDesign File Details
ID Util’s Preview window shows which InDesign version was used to create the INDD document and the document’s dimensions. This information can be handy, when you have to work with multiple files.
Markzware’s ID Util also has tabs for Stories, Images, and Fonts, which you can use respectively, to view story, image and font details. You can access an InDesign file’s story content, via the Stories tab.
The Images tab lists images used, their location, their status as found or missing, and also provides a preview of each image at the bottom of the window. Click the Show button, to open, in a Finder window, the folder that contains the image.
The Fonts tab lists the fonts used in the InDesign file, their status, and an option to show the fonts in Finder. A preview of a selected font is shown at the bottom of the window.
Print or Export InDesign Previews & Stories
For low-resolution proofs, you can print the previews that ID Util displays. To create previews with high image resolution, you can use the Resave HD option, if you have an appropriate InDesign version installed.
You can use ID Util to export previews as PNG, JPG, or PDF files for sharing. You can also extract InDesign text from your INDD document for copying and pasting, creating more content, or exporting to HTML, RTF, or TXT. So, make the most of your InDesign content!
