(Markzware White Paper)
Unlock Adobe InDesign files and convert those .indd files to Illustrator, PDF, and other file types, without needing the native Adobe InDesign application, by using InDesign converter, IDMarkz. This white paper by Markzware, Inc., describes challenges, solutions, and solution benefits of opening and converting InDesign files for use in other formats:
1. Executive Summary
Overview
Having the ability to convert large documents and down-save files, per client requirements, without corrupt files, missing fonts, conversion limitations can be challenging for design, print, and publishing workflows. These challenges can cause losses in productivity and revenue.
Main Problem: Backward Compatibility
File format version incompatibility can often cause issues for document production workflows. For example, one workflow member may prefer to submit Adobe InDesign documents, while another workflow member may work exclusively in Affinity Publisher. A file converter can help to connect different file formats.
Solution
File conversion solutions can move content from a document in one format to one or more file formats. For example, IDMarkz can convert InDesign documents to .ai, .pdf, .afpub, .qxp, and many other document formats.

Key Benefits of IDMarkz
• Quickly and easily convert Adobe InDesign files (without Adobe’s InDesign app), using an affordable, reliable stand-alone app.

3. Challenge
Document designers face several challenges when needing to convert Adobe InDesign files to other file formats:
Backward Compatibility
One of the biggest issues is backward compatibility.(1) Files created in newer InDesign versions can’t always open in previous versions. This can cause workflow problems for collaborators that use different software versions. Users may save the document in an incompatible format, which may cause the document to lose specific features and formatting.
Solution: Use a file conversion solution that supports the format that you need to convert to an earlier version.
File Corruption
File corruption can happen, when software crashes, hardware fails, or power outages occur.(1) Artwork may be lost when corrupted InDesign files fail to open.
Solution: Regularly backup work and use file packaging features in InDesign.
Missing Fonts
Dealing with missing fonts is a frequent frustration for designers.(1) If a user opens an InDesign document on a system that does not have the required fonts, the missing fonts are automatically replaced with default fonts. Formatting and layout problems can occur, in this case. Finding and loading the missing fonts can take an inordinate amount of time, particularly if they are difficult to obtain.
Solution: Keep software up-to-date and use compatible versions when collaborating.
Large File Sizes
High-resolution images and complex layouts can greatly inflate InDesign file size.(1) Larger files may crash, load slowly, and be more difficult to share, especially when slow internet connections or limited storage is involved.
Solution: Consider using third-party tools or services for more complex conversion needs.
Format Conversion Limitations
Some InDesign file conversions can be have difficulties, such as:
• Inability to edit when converting to PDF, EPS, or other complex formats
• Advanced feature (interactivity, animation, etc.) loss
• Layout and typography retention problems
Solution: Use efficient workflows for file conversion and management.
Client Requirements
Clients may request a file format unsuitable for the specific design.(2) TIFF and EPS formats may not be efficient or standard for digital document design.
Solution: Communicate clearly with clients about file format requirements and limitations.
4. Solution

Current State of the Art
The current state-of-the-art focuses on user-friendly, versatile, and accurate, conversion that may not need InDesign itself. This gives users more workflow and design tool options. The current state-of-the-art for Adobe InDesign file conversion involves several solutions:
Third-Party Conversion Tools
Advanced, specialized software, e.g., Markzware‘s IDMarkz, provides powerful conversion options:
• Multi-Format Conversion: IDMarkz converts InDesign files to many formats, such as Illustrator, PDF (including Canva PDF), Affinity Publisher, and QuarkXPress, without requiring InDesign installation.
• Batch Processing: Converts multiple InDesign files, at once.
• Preview Functionality: Users can examine InDesign file contents, before conversion.(3)
InDesign Export
Adobe InDesign offers built-in export capabilities:
• PDF Export: InDesign can directly export to PDF.(4)
• IDML Export: Content in the InDesign Markup Language (IDML) format can be opened in older InDesign versions or in third-party applications.
Cross-Platform Compatibility
Some modern conversion tools support Windows and macOS. For example:
• IDMarkz for macOS converts InDesign files on Mac desktops. IDMarkz SE for Windows converts InDesign files on the Windows platform.(5)
• This cross-platform support provides users with InDesign file conversion across both operating systems.
Cloud-Based Solutions
Some online services, such as the MarkzPortal SaaS solution, offer InDesign file conversion in the cloud:
• Web-based interfaces let users upload InDesign files for conversion without software installation.
• These services often support a variety of output formats with quick turnaround.
AI-Assisted Conversion
Some tools have artificial intelligence integration for more accurate conversion:
• AI can help users to retain complicated layout formatting in the converted document.
• Machine learning models help users who want to substitute fonts and edit images.
InDesign Conversion Technology
IDMarkz helps users to take control of their document production workflow, by allowing them to open, preview, and convert native Adobe InDesign files (.indd) to different formats without having to launch InDesign. Convert InDesign to QuarkXPress, InDesign to Affinity Publisher, and much more. Its handy desktop workflow features enable users to easily unlock volumes of valuable content held within Adobe InDesign files.
Competition Comparison
Here’s a comparison chart that compares IDMarkz and its top five competitors:
Competing InDesign Conversion Solutions
This chart compares IDMarkz to its top five competitors, based on key features relevant to file conversion and desktop publishing. IDMarkz stands out for its specialized ability to convert and preview InDesign files, while the other software options offer less intensive InDesign conversion capabilities, with varying levels of InDesign file compatibility.(6)(7)(8)(9)
IDMarkz vs. Affinity Publisher, Microsoft Publisher, & QuarkXPress
IDMarkz is a standalone InDesign file conversion application, while Affinity Publisher, Microsoft Publisher, and QuarkXPress are applications for general layout design. IDMarkz converts InDesign to multiple file types, while InDesign import in these applications is limited.
IDMarkz vs. InDesign
While Adobe InDesign is the native InDesign format, its support for other DTP formats is less extensive than the capabilities of IDMarkz. IDMarkz can convert InDesign files to QuarkXPress, Affinity Publisher, older InDesign versions, Acrobat, Illustrator, other popular desktop applications, IDML, PDF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, TXT, RTF, & HTML.
IDMarkz vs. Scribus
Scribus is software that can be used to design layout, typesetting, and PDF presentations & forms. It has only limited capabilities for InDesign import, InDesign text extraction, and direct InDesign conversion, which is IDMarkz’s main strength.
5. Solution Details

IDMarkz can be especially useful to document designers who want to access InDesign documents and to transfer .indd file content for editing, or otherwise using, in other document formats. Sample IDMarkz Reviews
I’ve got my InDesign files back!!!!
Just discovered new magic in the form of IDMarkz. Now I can open, convert and use dozens of old InDesign files I didn’t convert when I choose to not pay a monthly subscription/rent/ransom to Adobe and switched to the powerful Affinity suite of Publisher/Designer/Photo—highly, highly recommended, reasonably-priced, unexpectedly capable graphics tools for professionals. Bravo IDMarkz!– Bill Langenes, Parish Community Member, St. Andrew Catholic Church, Portland, Oregon
Lifesavers! Markzware ROCKS!!!!
I’m obviously not the only one who is sick of being forced to work around Adobe’s constant attempts to [get] more cash out of users who have supported their products for DECADES already. Well, I would prefer to give my money and support to third-party software developers like Markzware, who are actually committed to providing products that HELP their customers. Their products are excellent, and the support is absolutely fantastic too. Love it!– Alice Bell, Independent Design Professional & eMHIC Collaborators Member, Auckland, New Zealand
Works Great!!
I recently purchased IDMARKZ because I am running an older Mac and found out I can no longer upgrade to the most recent versions of Adobe Cloud products without replacing my perfectly good iMac. I have started getting files in the higher version of InDesign, and I hated to have to go back to the customer to ask them to save it back a version if they didn’t include an .idml file when they packaged it. It’s a great product and I wish I had gotten it sooner!– Vicki Bryant, Owner/Graphic Designer, V Bryant Graphic Design, Fort Mill, South Carolina

Usability and User Experience
IDMarkz provides an easy-to-use, online, Drag-&-Drop interface that allows users to drop a file onto the main IDMarkz interface. The application automatically generates a preview of the document.
Adherence to Industry Standards
Markzware has decades of experience in the development of file conversion solutions, so resulting conversions typically meet or surpass industry standards. Due to the nature of differences between file formats, established industry members have come to expect a possible need for touch-ups in converted files.
Speed of Implementation
The IDMarkz file conversion solution takes only moments to implement, since it allows users to drag-&-drop the file that they want to convert onto the app’s interface. Users can convert supported file types to numerous non-proprietary file types, including IDML, PDF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, TXT, RTF, and HTML. The document is available immediately upon completion of the file conversion.
Depending upon the file type, contents, and size of the file, processing may be instant or only a few moments. There is no need to install applications or plug-ins, so IDMarkz also saves the time that it would have taken to accomplish those types of installations.
Potential Impact on Productivity and Efficiency
File conversions processed via IDMarkz can dramatically increase productivity and efficiency over manual file conversion. The application’s processing speed allows more documents to be produced than could be produced by re-constructing each entire document by hand. Users have mentioned hours, days, and weeks of time saved on recreating the layout, formatting, editing, images, colors, etc.
