Jacques Dubuc describes his encounter with a crashing InDesign file:

In the morning, I’d done an upgrade of InDesign Creative Cloud, but nothing new. And, then, it says, “Oh, we are about to tweet your InDesign file on our servers. Click “OK”. Okay. And, then, it said, “Oh, Oops! We cannot repair it. You’d better redo the project.”

On a Monday morning, yes. Exactly. So, what did I do? I just downgraded InDesign to my last version and redone the process. Exact same thing. So, I open a chat with the technical services of Adobe and it just says the same. Just downgrade. Try, again. Nothing happens.

So, they told me to put my damaged InDesign file on the Creative Cloud, on the Adobe Cloud. That’s what I’d done. And they said, “Oh, we will check it. We will have a first answer, in about 24 hours, to check the file. So, I was afraid that they didn’t check, because Adobe I think has millions of customers. I don’t think our job will be the priority.

Difficulty Accessing Content in an InDesign File

Jacques Dubuc continued to strive to find a remedy for recovering the troublesome document:

So, I’d begun to research other solutions. We deactivated the proxy on our company’s internet. Nothing changed. I began to become desperate and I also looked into the damaged file, using a Notebook, to see that “Yeah, it seems quite okay.” And it’s difficult to understand for a designer, but it seems nothing very important, but no. The files are linked with our database.

And, by the way, about two days later, I got the answer from Adobe, and they said, “Oh, well, unfortunately, your file hasn’t been recovered.” … So, yes, I talked about Markzware. And, by the way, at the second after I talked about your company and that you recovered my file, they said, “Oh, I’m so sorry for that. And we are going to give you a free month’s Creative Cloud discount to cover the fees of the recovery.”

4. Solution

Markzware’s DTP File Recovery Service has recovered numerous QuarkXPress and InDesign files, as well as the occasional Illustrator or PDF file, with a very high success rate. In addition, Markzware solutions, such as OmniMarkz, PDFMarkz, QXPMarkz, and IDMarkz will also attempt to recover those bad files, with a simple drag and drop of the file onto the app’s interface.

After Jacques attempted several times without success to work with the Adobe InDesign file. He then tried Adobe’s InDesign fixing service, plus contacted Adobe support, to no avail. Adobe’s service did not work for Jacques, but Markzware was able to open the crashing InDesign file and recover the document, using OmniMarkz:

So, I had looked into the web about a solution for fixing damaged InDesign files. I was browsing different forums, but mostly every person said the same thing. So, you can check it. Nothing. Nothing.

And, then, I saw a post of a guy who said, “Oh, stop it. Now, if you have this kind of problem, you can check the Markzware site. It saved my life” and so on. So, I’ve remembered your company, because, in the past, I was working with QuarkXPress, and you already published [solutions] to convert InDesign files into QuarkXPress.

Markzware Can Assist with InDesign Files that
Trigger “Error Code 5” Messages

Jacques uploaded the file through Markzware’s page for the DTP File Recovery Service. This service returns as much recovered content as possible to the customer, which is usually all of the successfully recovered content.

Markzware received the damaged file, which was created in Adobe InDesign 2022. This document had triggered InDesign error messages, including messages similar to “Cannot open corrupt bad file”, “It is damaged and cannot be recovered,” and “Error code 5,” which is very commonly seen, when dealing with bad InDesign files.

Markzware dropped the file on the user interface in OmniMarkz, the standalone application from Markzware. Users don’t need to have Adobe InDesign installed or running on the computer in use.

OmniMarkz displayed a file preview, showing the pages of the layout, which reveals where problem files might be. The app also provided a file overview, showing such details as fonts and images used in the document. Users can consider these details, before taking the next steps in the workflow.

For example, this gave Jacques options to create a report of the file, share with workflow members, create a low-res PDF for sharing, export in various formats and images, or share a single page for social media posts. (Users can right click and share on LinkedIn or other such social media websites.)

With OmniMarkz, Markzware simply clicked open in InDesign, which opened the document in InDesign. The file contained a beautiful layout presenting some beautiful trips that Verdié Voyages offers to very exotic places. Images were exported, at the resolution used. For the most part, the file was fixed and corrected, including tables, graphs, etc.

6. Results

Money Savings

Jacques Dubuc said that the business was saved graphic design costs:

“Then, you [Markzware] sent me a PDF file of my damaged InDesign file and said, “If you want to get it back, you just have to pay the … 99 Euros, yeah. … the fee.”, yeah. And, so, we did, and you gave me my IDML and saved me about, I don’t know, maybe one month, full.“

Labor Savings

Jacques was saved from having to perform efforts that would have been required to manually re-create the document, including all of the stylized text, images, tables, graphics, and other layout details:

“About recovering, we recovered … about 85-95% of the file, about two or three blocks, text blocks. … And two tables that were … It was really nice.“

Time Savings

Jacques noted that being able to access the file contents, thanks to OmniMarkz, saved approximately one month of design work and that he did not have to wait long for the return of his document:

“So, I remembered your company. … So, I just came on to your website, saw that “Okay, I can send you [Markzware] my damaged file.” So, we paid the fee, so you can check the file, and we waited. And about, I don’t know, maybe a half hour.”

7. Reasons for Success

8. Next Steps

Jacques was able to proceed to work on the design layout that he created. He also mentioned that he plans to recommend Markzware, saying:
