Missing fonts are inactive during data conversion and can cause issues when using document conversion tools. Calculations for text positions are based on original font information (for example, character widths) in the PDF, so text may flow undesirably until the fonts are located and activated. If a list of those missing are displayed when file conversion is complete, you can change the fonts at that point, or you can edit the style sheets later.
If an unknown character or glyph in the PDF cannot be converted, a question mark (“?”) will be substituted in place of the character. At that point, you would need to locate the original font, activate it, and retry the conversion. If the “Substitute Missing Fonts” preference is selected, those missing (inactive) will be substituted with the application’s default. The actual font can be changed manually to a default for replacement, by editing the style sheet while no documents are open, or by changing the application’s substitution preferences.
